Time to Act Now

And so here we are almost 30 years after the amendment on the rights of women in Ireland to choose the right to terminate a pregnancy or not - even in the case where their lives may be at risk - our legislators have failed the people in refusing to protect the lives of Irish women.  It has taken the unnecessary death of Savita Halappanavar to bring the issue back to where we were in 1983.  Successive misogynistic and cowardly governments have chosen to ignore their constitutional duty to legislate on the issue in the vein hope that it would simply go away. The whole abortion or the right to choose issue has now come back to haunt the legislature in spades. There is nowhere to  hide. We do not want another referendum on this issue.  They have to come out from behind the skirts of the discredited Catholic Church and their moral storm-troopers - SPUC, Youth Defence, Opus Dei, The Knights of Columbanus and the other groups and individuals who have set themselves up as the moral police for the rest of Irish society. Such groups are in the main headed up by men who will never be in the position to have to make such a decision.  The right to life of pregnant women supercedes all other concerns.
